The Black Rock Garden Club held their annual tree planting initiative on April 26.  This year they planted 7 elm trees in the neighborhood.

The Black Rock School has been nominated for a Gold Leaf Award from the New England Chapter of International Society of Arboriculture.  The Gold Leaf Award is presented to individuals, organizations, and municipalities that have special projects, events, or ceremonies recognizing Arbor Day.  The Black Rock Garden Club supported the Arbor Day festivities at the Black Rock School and Tara Smiley started the Garden Club at the Black Rock School.  Please visit the Black Rock Garden Club website for more information.

TI4     For the second year, The Black Rock Garden Club’s Tree Initiative has planted trees along the streets of Black Rock.  Begun in 2006 in response to the loss of many old street trees taken down by the city, the Tree Initiative replaces the lost greenery of Black Rock.

Thank you to Laura Pennock from Black Rock Pilates and the Black Rock Garden Club for their generous and beautiful flowers planted around the Black Rock Art Center.  Wendy Lindquist also generously donated plantings and soon the whole area will be resplendent in colorful plantings.  The watering of the flowers is being done by summer intern volunteers.  If anyone would like to helpout with flowers or other plantings,

Is your sidewalk naked? Does your home need a little shade? Are you interested in improving air and water quality? Would you like to join your neighbors in beautifying Black Rock and maintaining our urban forest?

The Black Rock Garden Club is distributing trees in the neighborhood for as little as $45 each.  The trees are for planting in the “tree space” along streets.  On properties with sidewalks, that’s the space between the sidewalk and the street.  On properties without sidewalks, it’s within the city easements, generally 5-10” from the curb.

The Black Rock Garden Club and the Black Rock School’s Student Garden Club are pleased to announce a very special Arbor Day celebration to be held at the school on 545 Brewster Street at 10 AM on April 27, 2007. The event is to proclaim the First Annual Black Rock Arbor Day. The program will include presentations by elected officials, school personnel, the students’ Garden Club, and the Black Rock Garden Club. There will be a tree planting ceremony to commemorate the special day. The Black Rock Garden Club was awarded grants by RYASAP and the International Society of Arboriculture to fund the event.

The Black Rock Garden Club in association with the Black Rock School will host the first annual Arbor Day ceremony.  The mayor will be on hand to read a proclamation dedicating the event.  Childrens poems, songs and a tree planting in front of the school.
