Pole Dedication
10:00 am at Black Rock Elementary School
Thursday, September 20, 2007

In today’s world, peace needs to become more than just a word.  On Thursday, September 20, 2007, Black Rock Elementary School at 545 Brewster Street in Bridgeport, CT will take part in the worldwide 2007 International Peace Day Celebration by dedicating a peace pole in the front garden of the school.  The pole is a beautiful 4-sided wooden pole with the prayer "May peace prevail on earth" written on it in English, Spanish, French, and Animal Prints.
The students will create peace prayer flags of all shapes and sizes containing their prayers and hopes for peace.  These flags will adorn the school windows and the trees in the peace garden as a public statement “May Peace Prevail on Earth” and may it begin with each of us.
Anyone who wishes to participate in the dedication ceremony is welcome.  In addition, educators and parents are encouraged to visit the web site, http://www.worldpeace.org/activities.html, to learn about peace poles and the many activities they can do with their children to spread the message of peace.
This project is non-political – peace doesn’t necessarily have to be associated with the conflict of war, it can be related to violence/intolerance in our daily lives, to peace of mind.  To each of us, peace can take on a different meaning, but, in the end, it must begin with each of us.  In the words of the Dali Lama, “To have peace, we must be peace.”
“Our children will be the peacemakers and peacekeepers of the world we are leaving them,” said Holly Kotos, a neighbor on Bartram Avenue. “They have to learn from us that peace matters.”
There are more than 250,000 peace poles in nearly every country in the world.
